Myofascial Release Therapy
for Neck Pain

Myofascial Release Therapy (MFR) can be very helpful in reducing or eliminating neck pain. Like back pain, "neck pain" can include a myriad of symptoms, from the lower neck near your shoulder blades, to the very top of your spine as attaches to your skull. MFR Therapists evaluate the range of motion of your neck and then release fascial adhesions that are not always at the source of pain. For example, tight fascia on the right side of the neck could be causing the pain on your left side. Your therapist will also assess vertebral rotational misalignments which can cause discomfort and a decreased range of motion.

MFR can healp necp pain by releasing fascia compressing cervical vertebrae, by releasing complementary muscles such as the psoas, by improving overall posture, and by directly releasing back muscles, thereby stopping the pain-spasm-ischemia cycle.

Through easy, deep expansion of a tight area using warm hands directly on the client's skin, the MFR Therapist can help fascia along the spinal cord and around the lower back release. This work changes the make up of the fascia - like turning dried glue back into gel. Releasing fascia around the cervical vertebrae can complement the work of your Chiropractor or Physical Therapist and even make their work last. As the fascia is released, vertebrae are free to move back into proper position.

Through improved posture and better alignment, the body is able to move with less effort. Therefore, your MFR Therapist will assess the entire body when attempting to find the cause of any ailment. The pelvis is the foundation of the neck and back and can be the cause of your neck pain. For example, a rotated pelvis can cause a rotation that goes all the way up your next and back. Additionally, forward rotated shoulders or a kyphotic posture (forward head position) can add great force to posterior nech muscles.

Pain - Spasm - Ischemia (- Lack of Sleep)Cycle
When a posture muscle is damaged, the pain cycle can set in causing healing to take much longer than necessary. This cycle happens when a painful muscle is forced to continue carrying too great a load. The resulting spasm of the muscle prevents circulation (ischemia) in the affected area. This lack of circulation leads back to more pain. Additionally, this cycle can be exacerbated by a lack of sleep caused by the pain. Sleep is a healing, restorative time. Most muscles can also, in whole or in part, relax. Failure to get adequate sleep causes further delay in the healing process. MFR can help stop this cycle by restoring circulation and enabling your body to heal itself.
